Sophie Romana, Consultant

Sophie is a consultant with expertise in gender, women’s economic empowerment, and financial inclusion. Her recent engagements include developing a digital financial literacy/digital skills curriculum for women (with SIA) and a gender lens investing framework (with WOCCU), both through W-GDP, and co-designing a gender assessment for MFIs in Ghana and the DRC.

Prior to her consulting work, she spent over 11 years working with PlaNet Finance and Oxfam on financial inclusion in Central America, Africa, and South East Asia. While at Oxfam America she led the Community Finance Department with two flagship programs — “Saving for Change” and “R4, the Rural Resilience Initiative” — and represented the INGO at the UN High Level Panel on Women’s Economic Empowerment. She has worked on social justice, innovative financial and technical solutions to solve poverty, digital financial services and creative ways to empower women economically and politically.

She is a graduate in international and public law from La Sorbonne and holds an MBA from Columbia Business School. A dual citizen from France and the US, she lives in Maine where in her spare time she runs a small organic dog biscuit company, inspired by her dog, Castine, a chocolate Labrador.
